DWRB123 (DWRUB54/DWR51) is a two-row malt barley variety, which was released for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). The variety was identified for during 55th All India Coordinated Wheat and Barley Workers’ meet held at CCSHAU, Hisar during 21-24 Aug. 2016.
DWRB123 was subsequently released and notified by the “Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops (CVRC)” vide Gazette Notification S.O. No. 1007 (E) dated on 30th March, 2017 for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ).
DWRB123 was tested at multi-locations (26)over three years with two-row malt barley checks viz. DWRUB52, DWRB92, DWRB101, RD2849 and six row feed barley check BH902 under barley coordinated yield trials.
DWRB123 depicted average grain yield as 4870kg/ha (mean of 26 trials over 3 years), whereas the elite malt barley checks DWRUB52 and DWRB92 depicted grain yield 4530 and 4510kg/ha, respectively.
DWRB123 exhibited yield superiority for grain yield over two-row malt barley checks DWRUB52 (7.5%), DWRB92 (8.0%), RD2849 (4.6%), DWRB101 (0.8%) and six-row check BH902 (8.3%), respectively. DWRB123 exhibited the highest frequency (17/26) in first non-significant group.
In agronomical trials, at recommended N dose, DWRB123 exhibited the grain yield of 4906kg/ha and showed numerical advantage for grain yield over all the malt barley checks i.e. DWRUB52 (2.4%), RD2849 (4.09%) and DWRB101 (0.25%), respectively. DWRB123 showed minimum reduction (-6.75%) and (-3.85%) for grain yield in comparison to the check variety DWRB101 at lower and higher N dosages, indicating its buffering capacity and wider adaptability.
DWRB123 showed better resistance for yellow and brown rusts under artificial inoculations and natural field conditions over all the malt barley checks. DWRB123 showed the lowest leaf rust score of 20S under artificial inoculations in comparison to the checks (40S) viz. DWRUB52, RD2849 and DWRB101, respectively.
DWRB123 showed resistant (R) reactions to the prevalent barley stripe rust race 0S0 (57) in seedling resistant test (SRT) and alsoexhibited better resistance to spot blotch under artificial inoculations over all the check varieties. DWRB123 is erect type in growth habit with mean heading days (88), average maturity of 130 days and having average plant height of 93 cm.
Spikes are pale green, erect, tapering type in shape with rudimentary lateral florets. Grains are bold with medium hard texture and yellow in colour with 1000 grain weight of 49g (Table 1).

In malting quality analysis, DWRB123 depicted the highest malting quality score (57/90) over all the malt barley check varieties. DWRB123 also exhibited the good combination of desirable grain physical parameters viz. high bold grains (91.1%), low thin grains (1.8%), 1000 grain wt. (48.6 g) coupled with malting quality attributes viz. diastatic power (101.2 0L) and wort filtration rate (271 ml/hr) over all the checks (Table 2).
DWRB123 showed advantage for bold grains, thin grains, 1000 grain wt., germinative energy, diastatic power, wort filtration rate and Kolbach index over recent malt barley checks RD2849 and DWRB101.
