i) प्रजनित या मूल बीज ii) आधार बीज-I व II iii) प्रमाणित बीज ।

Importance of Aeroponic System in Potato Seed Production

The development technologies in genetic engineering give rise to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Genetically modified (GM) crops have become a reality in agriculture, food and feed market. Genetic engineering includes – insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, drought and salt tolerance, improved colors in fiber and flower crops, resistance to water logging and  longer shelf-life. The genetically modified (gm) crops have contributed to the successful incorporation of different traits by introducing transgenes such as bacillus thuringiensis (bt) insecticidal genes (cry1ab, cry1ac, cry1f, cry2ab, cry3a, vip3), herbicide tolerant genes  (cp4epsps, bar, pat, als), virus resistant (cp, prsv-cp, rep, hel), delayed ripening genes (sam-k, acc, pg), genes for color modification. B. thuringiensis and Cry protein toxins are efficient, safe and sustainable alternatives to chemical pesticides for the control of insect pests. The toxicity of the Cry proteins have traditionally been explained by the formation of trans membrane pores or ion channels that lead to osmotic cell lysis. The protein targetsthe major pests of cotton, tobacco, tomato, potato, corn, maize and rice.Mode of action of the crystal toxin on susceptible larvae involves ingestion of the crystalspore cell complex solubilization on th e midgut by the alkaline pH processing of the 51 and 42-kDa proteins to 43 and 39-kDa proteins binding of toxin proteins to cells of the gastric cecum and posterior midgut exertion of a toxic effect GM crops...

Potato is highly capital and labour intensive crop. Presently, India is the second largest potato producer in the world. For achieving higher productivity, fertilizer inputs particularly of nitrogen are increasing, which not only enhance the cost of production, but also is a major environmental concern.  Therefore, nutrient efficient varieties which produce higher yields per unit of nutrient applied or absorbed than other varieties under similar agro- ecological conditions play an important role in present day agriculture as the nutrient efficient cultivars would enable farmers to produce at a lower fertility level of the soil. Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla has developed a number of varieties for different agro-climatic conditions, these varieties vary in their response to nitrogen. It is possible to harvest these cultivars at varying rate of N application. So, yield of potato tuber of different varieties will determine not only N dose but also the extent of their nutrient use efficiency. Keeping these points in view, an experiment was conducted at Central Potato Research Station, Jalandhar, to find out nitrogen requirement of the popular and new potato varieties and to work out their agronomic use efficiency (AUE) under Indo Gangetic plains of India. An experiment was conducted for...

Potato production by scientific technique in plateau areas

Potato crop produces higher dry matter per unit area and time offers excellent opportunity for intercropping.  It is also a high value cash crop and thus enhances profitability of the system.  Potato crop fits well in different multiple and intercropping systems.  However, some minor adjustments are needed in production technology to make potato based cropping system profitable. The advantages of intercropping are well recognized in India where the holdings are very small  to medium and the land under cultivation is limited. Intercropping allows complimentary use of available resources like water, space, light and nutrients for conversion to biomass more efficiently as a result of difference in competitive ability of different intercrops for these resources. This efficient utilization of resources leads to yield advantage and gives increased yield stability as compared to sole cropping of the component crops. Studies have shown that, in the hills of Shimla, the growing season can be better utilized by intercropping of potato (Solanumtuberosum L.) and French bean (Phaseolusvulgaris L.), which not only gives yield advantage but also provides insurance against unpredictable weather that sometimes cause heavy loss . This may be due to late blight and other pest and disease...

Biofertilizers can play an important role in potato crop which has higher nutrients need because of its sparse root system.  The acidic hill soils of north western and north eastern hills have P fixing problem, thus it becomes imperative to adopt environment friendly approaches through integrated use of bio-fertilizers, chemical fertilizers and organic manures in right proportion for ensuring optimum potato yield. Nitrogen bio-fertilizers enhance the soil N availability by fixing the atmospheric nitrogen into plant usable-N by symbiotic or non-symbiotic fixation, whereas, P solubilizing bacteria (PSB) or fungi from phosphate bio-fertilizers produce organic acids which in release soluble P from native or insoluble P form of organic P and phosphate minerals. Bio-fertilizers refer to living organisms capable of augmenting plant nutrient supplies through use of renewable resources. They can be broadly classified as nitrogen or phosphorus bio-fertilizers. In potato, mainly non symbiotic N fixer, PSB and plant growth promoting bacteria have been found beneficial in rainfed, particularly in hills. In these ecosystems, potato is cultivated during summer season and soils contain high organic matter. These soils are acidic in nature and therefore, more P fixation take place into insoluble compound of Al and Fe ions.  The use of...

Potato is a cool season crop. Its wider adaptability makes it possible to grow this crop in almost all the states of the country but by adopting suitable production technology. The plateau area and southern hills, which represent a sizeable area under potato cultivation differ from other parts of the country with respect to climatic and soil conditions, in which major potato growing area lies. Hence, for exploiting the potential benefits, the farmers of this region need to adopt suitable technology for cultivating potato, which are discussed in detail in this paper. In India major potato area is concentrated in Northern plains (80 – 85%). The hilly areas of northern India accounts for 6-7 per cent and plateau areas of the country represents about 8 to 9 per cent area. The remaining area is present in problematic areas like Nilgiri and Palani hills of Tamil Nadu and Sikkim and North Bengal hills. In these different parts of the subcontinent potato is grown under different climatic and soil conditions which define the technology to produce good harvests of potatoes. Hence, adoption of appropriate technology suitable for the conditions makes it possible to realize the fullest benefits from the crop.  Potato in Plateau Region: The plateau...
