DWRB123 (DWRUB54/DWR51) is a two-row malt barley variety, which was released for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). The variety was identified for during 55th All India Coordinated Wheat and Barley Workers’ meet held at CCSHAU, Hisar during 21-24 Aug. 2016. DWRB123 was subsequently released and notified by the “Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops (CVRC)” vide Gazette Notification S.O. No. 1007 (E) dated on 30th March, 2017 for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). DWRB123 was tested at multi-locations (26)over three years with two-row malt barley checks viz. DWRUB52, DWRB92, DWRB101, RD2849 and six row feed barley check BH902 under barley coordinated yield trials. DWRB123 depicted average grain yield as 4870kg/ha (mean of 26 trials over 3 years), whereas the elite malt barley checks DWRUB52 and DWRB92 depicted grain yield 4530 and 4510kg/ha, respectively. DWRB123 exhibited yield superiority for grain yield over two-row malt barley checks DWRUB52 (7.5%), DWRB92 (8.0%), RD2849 (4.6%), DWRB101 (0.8%) and six-row check BH902 (8.3%), respectively. DWRB123 exhibited the highest frequency (17/26) in first non-significant group. In agronomical trials, at recommended N dose, DWRB123 exhibited the grain...

Barley is the fourth largest cereal in the world after maize, rice and wheat with a share of 5.5-6% of the global cereal production. Barley is grown nearly by 100 countries worldwide and during 2013, globally the area under the crop was nearly 49.14 million hectares with a production of 143.95 million metric tonnes (faostat3.fao.org ). As per third advance estimates of Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, India will produce 1.63 million metric tonnes of barley during 2014-15 (eands.dacnet.nic.in). Like other cereals, barley is also exposed to various diseases, which are ultimately responsible for significant yield reduction and poor grain quality. These diseases are wide spread from high input production conditions i.e. north western plain zone (NWPZ) to medium/ low input agro-ecologies of north eastern plain zone (NEPZ) and central zone (CZ). The chemical controls for diseases are available, however, inbuilt resistance mechanism is eco-friendly and best tactics for sustainable agriculture coupled with high benefit ratio. The pathogens may be disseminated through seed, soil and air. The seed borne pathogens can be controlled using seed treating chemicals. Barley is exposed to several biotic stresses, however, some major diseases are discussed below- 1. Yellow rust: Puccinia striiformis hordei (stripe rust)- Yellow rust  is the disease of cool temperature (10 –20oC) and the...

DWRB101 (DWR28 / BH581) is a new malt barley variety, which was developed using pedigree method at DWR, Karnal. The variety was identified for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ) during 53rd All India Coordinated Wheat and Barley Worker’s Meet held at JNKVV, Jabalpurduring 22-25 Aug. 2014. DWRB101 was tested at a total of 31 locations with four checksviz. DWRUB52 and DWRB92 (both two-row type) and K 551 and BH 902 (both six-row type) under coordinated evaluation trials. DWRB101 exhibited average grain yield as 5010 Kg/ha (mean of 31 trials over 3 years). DWRB101 depicted superiority in grain yield over two-row malt barley checks DWRUB52 (6.6%), DWRB92 (4.8%) and six-row checks K551 (15.2%) and BH902 (7.7%), respectively. In agronomical trials, at recommended N dose, the proposed variety DWRB101 showed numerical superiority for grain yield over both two-row malt barley checks i.e.  DWRUB52 (6.88 %) and DWRB92 (1.86%), respectively. DWRB101 is erect type in growth habit with mean maturity of about 132 days and having average plant height of 97 cm. Spikes are erect, tapering type in shape with rudimentary lateral florets. Grains are bold with medium hard texture, oblong shaped and yellow in colour with 46.9g 1000 grain...

Barley is considered as fourth largest cereal crop in the world with a share of 5.5-6% of the global cereal production. It is grown nearly by 100 countries worldwide and during 2012-13, barley occupied 0.69 m ha area in India with 1.75 million tonnes of grain production. Barley is frequently being described as the cosmopolitan of the crops and also considered as industrial crop for malt production. Malt is used in beer, hard liquors, malted milk and flavourings in a variety of foods. Barley malt can also be added to many food stuffs such as biscuits, bread, cakes and desserts. The demand of malt barley varieties is on continuous rise for malting and brewing in recent years. DWRB 92 is a new malt barley variety and was developed at DWR Karnal. It was identified during 52nd AICW & BIP workshop at CSAUA&T, Kanpur and subsequently it was also released and notified by the Central Sub-committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops (CVRC) vide Gazette Notification S.O. No. 1146 (E) dated on 24th April, 2014 for irrigated timely sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). Under coordinated evaluation trials, DWRB 92 (DWR 28...

Barley is the world’s fourth most important cereal crop.  In India, it is staple food of the hill people and barley is cultivated for food and feed purposes in plain parts of the country as Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Barley is also used for malt production, which is principally used in brewing industry and proving itself as a good source of better rural livelihood. In Malt Barley, production factors like cultivar  choice,  planting  date,  planting  density, fertilization, irrigation, weed management and quality seed are the most important and reflected in the yield and the malting quality of the crop. Cultivation of malt barley crop has specific crop production requirements which are as follows: Adaptation Barley is a rabi (winter season) cereal crop having short growing season. The ideal condition for growing barley is moderately dry period for sowing, occasional showers during the growing season and good weather for harvesting. The growing period in the plains lasts for about 5 months. It is grown mainly in the northern plains for malting purpose. It is a hardy crop and is quite suitable for rainfed drought prone areas and sodic condition.  In areas of good irrigation and medium fertility soils, malt barley of good quality can...
