Integrated crop disease and pest management in Papaya

Other names of multi storied cropping are multi-layer cropping and multi-tire cropping. It is one kind of intercropping. Growing plants of different height in the same field at the same time is termed as multi storied cropping. It is mostly practiced in orchards and plantation crops for maximum use of solar energy even under high planting density. It is the practice of different crops of varying heights, rooting pattern and duration to cultivate together. The objective of this system of cropping is to utilize the vertical space more effectively. In this system, the tallest components have foliage of strong light and high evaporative demand and shorter components with foliage requiring shade and or relatively high humidity. Benefits of multistoried cropping system:- Income per unit area increase substantially with this system and ensures a more evenly distribution of income and employment throughout the year from harvesting different crops in different season. Minimize risks of crop yield loss. This system enables a steady supply of farm products the whole round the year. Generates jobs & provides better labour use pattern. Helps to maximize land use. All growing space is used as crop fit together vertically (tall, medium & short), horizontally (all planting spots occupied) and underground (deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants). Reduces the impacts of hazards like high...

Fruit based multinational farming system in dry areas

Rice-wheat is one of the major cropping sequences being practiced on about 10.2 m ha area in India. The wide adoption of this system is mainly due to low risk of crop failure, good marketing facilities and better minimum support price. This system is very important for the national food security. To adequately address the nutritional security of the people, it is pertinent to increase the production of different vegetables and fruits. Owing to explosive increase in population and faster urbanization, it is very difficult to bring more area under vegetable and fruit cultivation. Also, the decreasing per capita land availability and increasing input costs have decreased the income and profit margins of the farmers. One of the ways to increase the farmer’s income is by increasing the cropping intensities following different cropping patterns. In past, the options tried for intensifying the rice-wheat cropping system were rice-rice-wheat, rice-wheat-greengram, rice-wheat-cowpea, rice-wheat-sorghum, rice-vegetable-wheat etc. Now, the governments of Haryana and Punjab have banned the cultivation of the summer rice due to fast depletion of the underground water. Also, some times, owing to early onset of monsoon as well as problem of manual picking and threshing of pods are posing hindrances to...

Intercropping, as one of the multiple cropping systems, has been practiced by farmers for many years in various ways and most areas, and has played a very important role in India. There is more cooperation in nature than competition. Cooperation is exemplified by mutually beneficial relationships that occur between species within communities.. When two or more crops are growing together, each should have adequate space to maximize cooperation and reduce competition between them. This is accomplished by the following factors namely: spatial arrangement, plant density, maturity dates of the crops grown, plant architecture. The objectives of Inter-cropping Systems are:  Inter-cropping was originally practiced as an insurance against crop failure under rainfall conditions. At present the main objective of intercropping is higher productivity per unit area in addition to stability in production. Intercropping systems utilizes resources sufficiently and their productivity is increased. Main objectives of intercropping are: Insurance against total crop failure under aberrant weather conditions or pest epidemics. Increase in total productivity per unit land area. Judicious utilization of resources such as land labour and inputs. Types of Inter-Cropping: Mixed intercropping: Growing two or more crops simultaneously with no distinct row    arrangement. Row intercropping: Growing two or more crops simultaneously where one or more crops are planted in rows.          ...
