The most prominent factors affecting the safety and quality of grain storage are the infestations of Khapra beetles, caterpillars and rats. In addition to seeds and soil, these insects can also access storage through equipment used in threshing or casting. As a result of improper storage in the country, more damage to wheat grain is caused by insects, rodents and micro-organisms.

Safe storage of seeds

Safe storage of food grain and seeds

The rising concern on pesticide residue free products, reduction in cost of chemical control and resistance development had led to the search for an alternate eco friendly and economically feasible tactic. With advancement in the studies on various approaches in IPM of storage pests it is considered that semiochemicals particularly pheromones, have good potential for the suppression of stored-product insects by modifying or manipulating their behaviour. One third of world’s food grain is being lost during storage every year due to various biotic and abiotic factors. The biotic factors include attack of different pests like insects, fungi, bacteria, rodent’s etc. Abiotic factors like high grain temperature and moisture, along with dockage, broken kernels and lack of regular monitoring provide conditions that accelerate mold and insect development. Among which more damage is due to insect pest attack. In India, post-harvest losses caused by the unscientific storage, insects, rodents, micro-organisms etc., account for about 10 per cent of total food grains. Stored product pests are obligatory pests that can infest and damage a wide variety of food materials. Different stored grain pests have their own different ways of feeding and damaging the grains ultimately leading to huge...

Global loss in stored products, caused by insects, have been estimated to be between five and ten percent. In the tropics it may reach upto 30%. Insects not only cause direct loss through consumption of kernels but also indirect losses which includes accumulation of frass, exuviae, webbing and insect cadavers. High levels of this insect detritus may result in grain that is unfit for human consumption. Storage insect pests are categorized into two types viz., 1. Primary storage pests Primary storage pests are those capable of penetrating and infesting intact kernels of grain, and have immature stages that can readily develop within a kernel of grain.  Insect Family : order Damaging stage Damage symptom Images Rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae Curculionidae: Coloeoptera Grubs and adults Grubs feed inside, grains are hollowed out and in some cases the kernels are reduced to powder. Adults make irregular holes on the grains.   Adult weevil Khapra beetle Trogoderma granarium Dermestidae:  Coleoptera   Grubs Grubs mainly attacks the grains of wheat, maize, sorghum, pulses and oil seeds. Grubs remain on the top few layers of the bulk grains    Grub Pulse beetles Callosobruchus chinensis C. maculatus C. analis Bruchidae: Coleoptera Grubs Individual eggs are laid on pulses by adult beetle and the emerging  grubs feed on the inner contents and pupates inside the grain  Egg and Adult Cigarette beetle Lasioderma serricorne Anobiidae:  Coleoptera Grubs and adults Grubs and adults feed on stored tobacco, turmeric, chillies and...

The use of crop products available at the domestic level in food grain storage by traditional practices

Keeping in mind the importance and high demand of cereals for consumption, their proper storage must not be neglected. The post-harvest damage caused during storage is mainly due to infestation by storage pest causes huge quality losses in food grains combined with economic losses. This damage may be due to direct feeding of grains by insects and pests or by microbiological agents like fungi and bacteria. The post-harvest losses of food grains and oilseeds are estimated to be 10 to 20 per cent in India (Chahal, 2011).  India experiences severe losses in storage of food grains, as per the official records economic loss to the tune of 11,700 tons of food grains was reported to have occurred in the government godowns during 2010 alone (Chahal, 2011). Through use of proper pest management practices the above storage losses can be minimized effectively. Different causative agents are moulds and insects which cause economic and quality losses during storage, some of the methods practiced by rural house-holds from ancient times and use of some plant products for safe and economic storage of food grains along with detailed procedure are being discussed here in this article. Types of pest causing infestation:  Fungi: Fungi are...
