Tag

Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is the fourth most important crop of the world after rice, wheat and maize with respect to area and production. It is known as a hardy crop compared to  wheat, rice and maize and more suitable for areas with limited water (drought or less water availability), nutrients and soil health (salinity/alkalinity). The geographical range in which barley can be grown as a staple crop is quite wide and therefore it is grown from sub-tropical and arid plains to hills and cold desert ecologies under rainfed or limited irrigated conditions around the world except tropics. It is an ancient crop domesticated in pre-historic era with proposed centres of origin in Near East (Fertile Crescent) and South East Asia (China, Tibet and Nepal). During the course of evolution, barley has dichotomised in six-row and two-row types where six-row type barley is used mainly as feed and food while the two-row type is utilized for malting purposes. The preferred six row type barley used for food purposes is the husk less (naked) barley where the grain is free threshing similar to wheat i.e., the outer husk gets removed during the course of threshing and the grains do not require a mechanical processing (pearling)...

DWRB.137: Barley's high productive, anti yellow-rustic and six-line new variety

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an ancient cereal grain, which upon domestication has evolved from food grain to a feed and malting grain. It is considered fourth largest cereal crop in the world, with a share of 7% of the global cereal production. Barley grains have higher soluble dietary fibre and lower low density lipoprotein (LDL) content and hence also recommended medicinally. Barley is also a rich source of tocols, including tocopherols and tocotrienols, which are known to reduce serum LDL cholesterol through their antioxidant action. Barley is grown nearly by 100 countries worldwide and during 2011, the global area under the crop was nearly 48.60 million hectares with a production of 134.27 million tonnes. In India, area under the crop is concentrated in the states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar etc. in plains and Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir in the hills. During 2011-12, in India, barley occupied nearly 0.65 m ha area producing nearly 1.61 m tons grain, with a per hectare productivity of 24.8 q. This rise in production over last year was due to the availability of new high yielding, stable and disease resistant varieties with adoption...

91 Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is an important coarse cereal crop, being grown in rabi (winter) season in northern plains, hills and north-eastern plains of India. Since long it has been considered, as poor man’s crop because of its low input requirement and better adaptability to harsh environments, i.e. drought, salinity, alkalinity and marginal lands etc. The demand of malt barley as raw material for malting and brewing is on continuous rise in recent years. Malt is used in beer, hard liquors, malted milk and flavourings in a variety of foods. Barley malt can also be added to many food stuffs such as biscuits, bread, cakes and desserts. Barley is preferred by farmers in the water scare areas of the states as Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan in rotation to cotton, pearl millet and sorghum, over wheat. The major problem in such areas is the delayed sowing of the rabi, crop. DWRB 91 is a new early maturing malt barley variety and was developed at DWR Karnal. It was identified during 51st AICW&BIP workshop at RRS, SKRAU, Durgapura, Jaipur and subsequently it was also released and notified by the Gazette Notification S.O. No. 952 (E) dated on 10th...

The annual requirement of barley for malting purposes is on continuous rise in recent years. With the growing urbanization, open economy and changing lifestyles demand for quality malt and malt products has increased in last two decades in India. Malt is being utilized for brewing, distillation, baby foods, confectionaries, cocoa-malt drinks and medicinal syrups etc. Barley cultivation for malting purposes is mostly confined to the north western plains in Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab states in India. Under some areas of these states where rabi sowings are delayed due to late harvest of previous kharif crops like cotton, sugarcane, sorghum and pearl millet, such areas can be put under malt barley cultivation by farmers. Keeping in mind, the late sown requirement of the farmers of north western plains, two short duration malt barley varieties viz. DWRB 73 (two-row type malt barley) and DWRUB 64 (six-row type) were developed. These varieties were released and notified by the “Central Sub-Committee on Crop Standards, Notification and Release of Varieties for Agricultural Crops (CVRC)” in 2011 and 2012, respectively for irrigated late sown conditions of North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ). These varieties can be fitted well in potential areas of barley cultivation under late sown...
