1. Climate Change: A Growing Global Concern

Climate Change and its impact on Groundwater Dependent Farming in India To secure India's agricultural future, it is necessary to adopt a multi-pronged approach. This should include promotion of water-efficient technologies, crop diversification, rainwater harvesting and strong groundwater management policies. Climate Change and its impact on Groundwater Dependent Farming in India

Agriculture is the backbone of the Himalayan economy, with many people depending on it for their livelihood. Changes in climate, including the melting of glaciers, affect agriculture, leading to reduced crop yields, and loss of income. Decreased crop yields and loss of plant biodiversity have serious impacts on the ecosystem, making it more vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, landslides and soil erosion.

Climate change is a global phenomenon which refers to long term changes of temperature and weather patterns. Major variations in temperature like extreme coldness in winter or extreme heat during summer occurs rapidly. Moreover alterations in seasonal rainfall also occurs leading to flash flood or off-season drought period. Climate change is caused by various factors out of which the main cause is human alterations to the environment. Since the 1800s, various human activities are mainly responsible for the change in climate which include activities like burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), deforestation, etc. Since the nineteenth century, anthropogenic activities have caused an increase in average temperature of 0.9 °C, primarily as a result of greenhouse gas (GHG) releases into the atmosphere. Given the rate of deforestation, the increase in GHG emissions, and the pollution of the soil, water, and air, it is predicted that this rise will be 1.5 °C by 2050, though it may even be higher. Change in climate also disrupts the agriculture sector as it reduces the availability of food due to reduction in food productivity, lack of water availability, presence of problematic soil conditions like salinity, lack of easy access to food, etc.  It not only affects the...

Orphan crops are  crops that are not traded internationally and very less attention is provided to them in terms of research, training and extension. These are grown in Asia, Africa and South America. Generally these constitute major part of local diet. In comparison to major food crops like rice, wheat and maize, breeding technology for orphan crops is far away behind. Similar to major crops, orphan crops are also member of different types of food i.e. cereals, legumes, vegetables, root and tuber crops. Orphan crops are also called as neglected, minor, promising, niche, traditional, alternative crops, future smart food and many more. Worldwide, around 12000 crop species are classified as suitable for human consumption, yet 30 crops play important role in feeding the world and to our utter surprise out of that, 60% of world population’s dietary energy is fed by rice, maize and wheat. This is mainly due to strong policy support, target breeding efforts and trade policies in favor of major food crops. Beside these factors changes in traditional food habits have resulted in an overdependence on energy rich and nutrient poor staple crops. Different types of orphan crops are: 1. Millets: Millets ere tolerant to moisture deficit (Kholova et. al,2010) and have great suitability in semi arid...

Climate change and variability are concerns of human being. There current droughts and floods threaten seriously the livelihood of billions of people who depend on land for most of their needs. The global economy is adversely being influenced very frequently due to extreme events such as droughts and floods, cold and heat waves, forest fires, landslips etc. The natural calamities like earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, though not related to weather disasters, may change chemical composition of the atmosphere. It will, in turn, lead to weather related disasters. The loss of forest cover, which normally intercepts rainfall and allows it to be absorbed by the soil, causes precipitation to reach across the land eroding top soil and causes floods and droughts. Paradoxically, lack of trees also exacerbates drought in dry years by making the soil dry more quickly. Among the greenhouse gases, CO2 is the predominant gas leading to global warming as it traps long wave radiation and emits it back to the earth surface. Climate change and agriculture Based on some of the past experiences indicated above, impact of climate change on agriculture will be one of the major deciding factors influencing the future food security of mankind on the earth. Agriculture is not only sensitive...

Impact of changing environment on agriculture ...
