The height of Chuli, Jardalu or Apricot tree is about 10 m. The leaves are oval to round oval and sub-heart shaped.Flowers and new leaves mostly appear in the month of March-April. In low altitude areas, fruits are produced in the months of June-July and in high altitude areas in the months of July-August.

Fruit tree start decline with their yield and also decline of tree starts with sparse appearance, yellowing and different type foliage symptoms, undergrowth and sickly appearance, dried-up top growth with small and less number of fruits. The branches of trees start to die from the top to downwards, ultimately resulted poor quality fruits (rough surface, thick skin and less juice). Such type of decline may be seen in whole orchards, on in a single tree or patches. The fruit growers do not adopt the proper management practices in terms of plant protection, manuring, irrigation, mulching, pruning etc. and the orchards become sick. In general, canopy of fruit crops has irregular shape. Trees of irregular shape and size are difficult to deal with and even culminate into poor yield in the subsequent years as the lower branches of canopy gradually turns inert and infertile as well. The technology also helps in maintaining the manageable tree height with open architecture and canopy of healthy shoots with outwardly growth facilitating penetration and utilization of light. Crowding and encroachment of trees with subsequent inefficient light utilization, is an obvious problem with older orchards, if trees are not well managed. The internal bearing capacity of trees also decreases with time, due to overshadowing...

Psyllids pests are major problem in fruit crops under Indian subcontinent. Psyllids pests feeds phloem sap form plants, belongs to series Sternorryncha of suborder Homoptera. The group comprises over 3000 species of psyllids in 235 recognised genera, distributed worldwide. Super family Psylloidea comprises 6 families viz., Psyllidae, Calophyidae, Phacopteronidae, Homotomidae, Carsidaridae and Triozide. Psyllids are free living and 15 per cent of known species of psyllids are gall inducers. Life cycle of psyllids involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars before becoming adult. Basic characters of Psyllid pests Adult psyllids resemble miniature cicads, ranging in length from 1-10 mm Both sexes posses two pairs of wings, forewings with harder constitency than hind wings Beak is short and three segmented Five nymphal instars, wingless, possessing fore wing and hind wing pads. Nymphs produce white waxy secretions Psyllids are dioecious and at emergence the sexes normally occur in a ratio of 1:1. Male and female produces sex specific and species specific acoustic signals during mating Economically important as pest, vector and biocontrol agent Biology of Psyllids Eggs of Psyllids The eggs are generally brown to black in colour, 1 mm long and ovoid in shape, although colour, size, and shape can vary slightly between species. Each female lays between 45 and 700 eggs, either in clusters of approximately 10-150...

Disturbance in the plant tissue metabolic activity and environmental variables like temperature, light, aeration and nutritional imbalances resulting disorders in the fruit crops. In fruit crops, the deficiency of micro-nutrients just like Zn, Bo, Mn  causes many more disorders than that of macro-nutrients. 1. Physiological disorders of Mango: Spongy Tissue in Mango:  It is a major problem in Alphonso, It is a physiological disorder in which fruit pulp remains unripe because of unhydrolyzed starch due to physiological and biochemical disturbances because of high temperature, convective heat and post harvest exposure to sunlight. Management: Use of mulching and post harvest exposure to low temperatures between 10-15 C for 10-18 hours has been useful in reducing the malady. Biennial Bearing in Mango: This is one of the most burning problems since it renders mango cultivation less remunerative to the growers. Biennial bearing is also known as alternate bearing. It indicates yield variations in alternate years i.e. an year of optimum  or  heavy  fruiting followed by a year of little or no fruiting.  The  problem  of biennial  bearing  is  a  varietal character governed by genetic makeup, and this tendency starts exhibiting in mango plant even at the second year of fruiting and become more serious as the age advances. Management : Proper  upkeep  and  after ...

Intensive Horticulture - Today's requirement for growing population

Fruit based multinational farming system in dry areas

The pomegranate Punica granatum L. belongs to the family Punicaceae. Pomegranate is cultivated in home gardens especially as a medicinal plant and as a fruit tree. There is no other fruit crop that has high medicinal value compared to that in pomegranate. One of the oldest known fruits found in writings and artefacts of many cultures and religions. Pomegranate is an original native of Persia. This nutrient dense, antioxidant rich fruit has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. 1. Alternaria fruit spot: Alternaria alternata Symptoms: Small reddish brown circular spots appear on the fruits. As the disease advances these spots, coalesce to form larger patches and the fruits start rotting. The fruits get affected which become pale and become unfit for consumption.    Management: Cultural: All the affected fruits should be collected and destroyed. Chemical: Spraying Mancozeb (0.25%) or Captaf (0.25%) effectively controls the disease. 2. Anthracnose: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides Symptoms: Appears as small regular or irregular dull violet or black leaf spots with yellowish halos. Leaves turn yellow and fall out. Symptoms appear on flowers also. Both tender and mature fruits develop spots which are initially circular later becoming irregular, brown to dark brown covering the fruit partly or wholly with sunken centres. Diseased portions appear with minute, black dots representing acervuli. The disease is...
