Management of Mango Malformation

Mango the king of fruit occupies approximately 50% of all tropical fruits produced worldwide. Mango is growing in many countries like India, Indonesia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Mexico, Phillipines, Pakistan, Vietnam and Thialand. Mango is nutritionally rich and its pulp contains good dietary fiber, pro-vitamin A, Vitamin C and diverse polyphenols Further, India share approx. 49.62 per cent of area and nearly 42.06 per cent of world’s mango production. Moreover, mango production in Uttar Pradesh was the highest i.e. 23.85 per cent in country. Various varieties of mango are cultivated in India but Dashehari stood first in terms of choice particularly in U.P. Dashehari fruit size is medium, shape is elongated with yellow fruit colour. But, the problem of tissue softening (jelly seed) disorder is very high in Dashahari mango (Singh et al., 2006). Several commercially grown mango varieties in India such as ‘Dáshehari’, Langra, Chousa, Bombay green (Singh 2011, Srivastav et al., 2015) or exotic varieties such as ‘Tommy Atkins’, ‘Sensation’, ‘Zill’ and ‘Kent’ (Oosthuyse 1993) are susceptible to jelly-seed disorder. Among these varieties the incidence of JS (excessive softening of tissue of pulp around the stone) is very high in Dashehari, thus need major attention, and it brought down the export potential of this...

Many physiological disorders in fruit affect both quality and storage life of mango in all growing regions. In mango a number of factors are responsible for mango yield decline, yet physiological disorders play more devastating and vital role. As a result, mango growers are losing their faith and interest in mango orchards and trying to shift their cultivation practices from mango to other crops. In this article we discussed the important physiological disorders along with their possible management strategies which will certainly help the farmers in timely overcoming this malady for getting satisfactory remunerative prices from mango cultivation. Physiological disorder any kind of abnormality in economically important part of fruits or other parts that contribute to yield and quality of fruits is termed as physiological disorder. Cause of physiological disorders- Deficiency of micronutrient Sudden fluctuation in temperature Poor soil conditions Improper moisture availability during cultivation. Physiological disorders of mango: Alternate Bearing: Alternate bearing is a very serious and an old problem in mango. It is the production of a heavy crop in one year or very little crop in the next year. South Indian cultivars are regular in bearing. Alternate bearer in North India cultivars are specifically Langra, Chausa, Causes:- Varietal differences. Growth habit. Crop load. Cultural practices. Sex ratio. Insect-pest and disease. Measure:- Use an ethylene releasing compound, ethephon inducing flowers every...

Alternate bearing means production of an excessive crop one year followed by little or no crop next year and Irregular bearing means production of a large crop one year followed by a lesser crop next year / or any irregular succession of crops differing  as to yields. This phenomenon in perennial fruit crops appeared to be governed by positive and negative regulatory factors and their interplay decided the fate of meristems under optimum environmental cues. Flower initiation is very important because it is the first step towards attaining fruit.  Floral induction is considered to be the result of elevated levels of up-regulated florigenic promoter (FP) and down-regulated vegetative promoter (VP), primarily gibberellins, whereas the reverse condition promotes vegetative growth. The production of vegetative shoots in place of reproductive shoots is due to the elevated level of gibberellin which is considered as a vegetative promoter. Paclobutrazol, a gibberellin inhibitor, reduces VP level and thereby increases FP/VP ratio which stimulates flowering shoots in weakly inductive shoots of fruit crops. Mango is a tropical evergreen fruit crop having a strong tendency towards alternate or biennial bearing habit. One of the methods to manipulate flowering is through the use of synthetic plant growth regulator, Paclobutrazol and potassium nitrate. The...

Value added products of Mango

The disorder was first reported by Maries (Watt, 1891) in Darbhanga, Bihar (India). In the last three decades or so it has assumed an alarming situation in the Northern India where it is threatening for the mango growers because all the commercial cultivars are highly susceptible to malformation. It widely occurs in Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and less prevailing in Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, it is negligible in West Bengal and Bihar. The southern mango growing regions like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala almost free from this disorder. Symptoms of malformation: The incidence of malformation varies from year to year, cultivar to cultivar and also with age of the trees. Generally it is occur in two forms; vegetative and floral malformation. i. The vegetative malformation is observed at seedling stage in nursery. On, seedling over three month old, swelling appears in the axil of leaves. The affected plant shows bunching of terminal portion of leaf, shortening of the size of leaf lamina, shortening of internodal length and reduced length of petiole. ii. Flora malformation directly affects the tree productivity. In the case of bearing trees the panicles are affected. The peduncles become thick and fleshy with profuse branching. The floral branches are crowded and enlarged...

Integrated Management of Fruit Flies in Horticultural Crops

Mango Malformation disease and its treatment
