The symptoms and treatment of important micro nutrients deficiency in soil

The significance of molybdenum in plants

Fertilizer is one of the key inputs in augmenting food grain production. Considering the fact that about 40-50% of the applied fertilizer nitrogen is lost by ammonia volatilization, leaching, run-off and de-nitrification, development of more efficient nitrogen fertilizers such as neem-coated urea needs to be encouraged by providing price incentive to the fertilizer manufacturers. Most of the present suite of fertilizer products were developed more than 40 years ago. Over the past 25 years, no “new” efficient fertilizer product has been developed particularly no product affordable for use on food crops by farmers in less developed countries. New and improved fertilizers are critical to help feed the world’s growing population, provide sustainable global food security and protect the environment. Major recommendations emanating from the above discussion is that there is a dearth need of developing new and improved fertilizers i.e., customized fertilizers based on soil-test-crop response for major cropping and farming systems in different agro climatic regions of the country. Customized fertilizers According to FCO, Customized fertilizers is the use of the Fertilizers Best Management Practices and are generally assumed to maximize crop yields while minimizing unwanted impacts on the environment & human health. Fertilizer Best Management Practices will make it easier for farmers, extension agents, crop advisers & researchers, to exchange...

Importance of sulfur in oilseed crops

Phosphorus (P), an essential macronutrient for all living organisms, is a vital component for building blocks of genes and chromosomes. In plants, it plays a role in virtually all biochemical processes that involve energy transfer.  It is a constituent of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is often termed as ‘energy currency’ of the plant cell. In plant, P is essential for photosynthesis, respiration and root growth, flowering, fruiting, seed setting and seed yield. The total P content in agricultural crops ranges from 0.1 to 0.5%. Phosphorus is taken up by the plant as primary orthophosphate ion ( H2PO4- ) but it is also absorbed as secondary orthophosphate ( HPO42- ). Phosphorus fixation is a major problem in acid and calcareous soil. There are some techniques which helps to reduce fixation and enhances phosphorus use efficiency in soil. Availability of Phosphorus for use by plant Availability of P is influenced by pH as follows Both form of P is maximum available at the pH of 6-7. At pH 7.2 H2PO4-ion is equal to HPO42- . <7.2 pH H2PO4-ion is dominant. >7.2 pH HPO42- ion is dominant. When pH is <5 P is present as H3PO4. When pH is >9 PO43- is dominant. Forms of Soil Phosphorus The total phosphorus content in Indian soils ranges from...

The productivity as well as the quality of citrus fruits is affected to a greater extent due to the physiological and nutritional disorders. In citrus fruits, the deficiency of micronutrients causes many more disorders than that of macronutrients. Nutritional disorders have become widespread with diminishing use of organic manures, adoption of high density planting, use of root stocks for dwarfing, disease and salt tolerance, unbalanced NPK fertilizer application. To get high quality fruit and yields, micronutrient deficiencies have to be detected before visual symptoms are expressed. 1. Boron deficiency in Citrus Symptoms: Citrus trees deficient in boron produce distorted leaves. Mature leaves show corking or splitting of veins and midrib. Leaves are twisted. Fruits tend to be hard and mis-shaped. Cracking of fruits is also seen. Brown gum pockets are seen in the albedo and around the seeds which may be aborted. Corking of veins is seen as in the greening disease and in the yellow corky vein disease.   Boron deficiency symptoms on leaf and fruit Correction Deficiency of this nutrient can be overcome by spraying 0.1 per cent solution of either borax or boric acid. 2. Copper deficiency Copper deficiency is seen in situations where zinc, iron and manganese deficiency are seen and when copper based fungicides are not...
