Plants are the prime source of essential minerals nutrients. These mineral elements which play vital role for human beings for their existence and the continuity race of life. Some plants are rich for some mineral and have deficiency to the other. No plant alone that contain all mineral elements in efficiently for human beings from the earth. Deficiency of mineral is also called as ‘Hidden hunger’, results in poor growth and compromised psychomotor development of children, reduced immunity, exhausted, fatigue, irritability, weakness, hair loss, wasting of muscles, sterility, morbidity and demise (Stein, 2010). Conventional breeding and genetic engineering techniques are the two approaches that may be used to bio-fortify the crops with minerals like iron and zinc (Tiwari et al., 2010).  “Biofortification” or “biological fortification” called as nutritionally enhanced food crops with increased bioavailability to the human population that are developed and grown using modern biotechnology tools, conventional plant breeding methods, and agronomic practices. Biofortification is an upcoming, effective, bright, cost-effective, and sustainable technique of providing micronutrients to a population that has limited access to diverse diets and other micronutrient interventions. Success stories of biofortification include lysine and tryptophan rich QPM (quality protein maize), Vitamin A rich orange sweet potato; generated by crop breeding, oleic acid,...

Nutrient supply and element management in plants

The symptoms and treatment of important micro nutrients deficiency in soil

फसल उत्पादन में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका और नगण्‍य अावश्यकता वाले शुक्ष्‍म तत्‍व (ट्रेस एलीमेंट्स)  For proper growth and development of plants, require essential nutrients which are categorized in two groups on the basis of amount of requirement in plant body as macronutrients (more required) and micronutrients / trace elements (less required). Deficiency of trace elements in soil inhibits plants to complete its life cycle properly which ultimately affect on crop production. Therefore, farmers should give more emphasis on this aspect and extension agency should provide more information on trace elements to farmers for their awareness and better knowledge. Plants require food for growth and development. At the beginning of the new phase of the life process from a seed or other propagule, plants are nourished by the food reserved in such structures or organs. This period is very short and in latter stages when the plants are growing then generally 16 nutrients are very essential for proper establishment and completion of life cycle. These are: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur, boron, copper, chlorine, iron, manganese, molybdenum and zinc. In addition, more elements viz., sodium, cobalt, vanadium, silicon etc. are absorbed by some plants for special purposes. All these elements are not required for all plants, but all have been found essential...

Integrated nutrient management (INM) is an approach to soil fertility management that combines organic and mineral methods of soil fertilization with physical and biological measures for soil and water conservation. INM adopts a holistic view of plant nutrient management by considering the totality of the farm resources that can be used as plant nutrients. Integrated nutrient management is based on three fundamental principles: maximize the use of organic material ensure access to inorganic fertilizer and improve the efficiency of its use minimize losses of plant nutrients Research gaps in integrated nutrient management The research gaps include: Mismatching of INM practices developed at research stations with the farmers resources and their practices INM recommendations for different crops are not based on soil testing and nutrient release behaviour of the manures Nutrient balance/flow analysis vis-a-vis soil fertility management practices with special reference to INM at farm level needs to be worked out Nutrient release characteristics of farm residues in relation to their quality to develop decision support systems Biofertilizers were not included as component of INM in many cases; and Integrated Farming Systems approach needs to be encouraged for sustaining livelihood in rural areas particularly for small and marginal farmers. Role of biofertilizers in INM Different types of biofertilizers available at present among that Rhizobium is relatively more...
