Effect of heat and cold stress in swine production and its amelioration सूअर उत्पादन में गर्मी और ठंड के तनाव का प्रभाव और उसका सुधार At every stage of the production cycle of pigs, abiotic stresses like heat stress and cold stress severely impairs efficiency. Heat stress is one of the largest economic barriers to the pork industry. Pigs are mainly sensitive to heat stress because they lack functional sweat glands and in spite of decades of intense genetic selection and having a thick layer of subcutaneous adipose tissue that acts as an effective insulation layer. Over the past several decades, the swine industry has prioritised production efficiency and hence, has achieved rapid improvements in the lean growth and reproductive efficiency of pigs. The combination of climate change forecasts, increased pork production in tropical and subtropical regions of the globe, and improved genetic capacity for lean tissue accretion and fecundity, all point to increasing adverse impacts of heat stress on pork production efficiency and quality. Even though optimal heat/ cold-stress abatement strategies were implemented by all pig producers, these stresses have been estimated to economically cost the swine industry annually through reduced/inconsistent growth, poor reproductive performances, increased mortality and morbidity, and decreased pork quality. The small intestine of the adult pigs is approximately 18 meters long. The small and large intestine grow and completely develop and becomes functional only after 6-8 weeks of birth so why the weaning is required for piglet to digest fibrous and coarse feeds in better way. The energy and protein are required in right proportion in the diet of pigs for proper utilization and further development of organs and productive performances. Energy and amino acids imbalance results in improper growth, poorer feed efficiency and low protein and fat deposition. Therefore, pigs are fed on balance diet in respect of protein together with appropriate amount of energy, minerals and vitamins to achieve best results (Table 1). It is well-established facts that feed accounts for 70-75% of total cost of production. A common conventional diet of pig contains 60-80% cereal grains and its by-products, 20-40% vegetable protein supplements.
