Water conservation and management techniques in fruits cultivation

Optimal planting geometry and fertilizer application method for drip irrigated vegetable crops

Adopt Shower (Sprinkler) irrigation techniques - get bumper crop

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple food crops in the world. In Asia, more than two billion people are getting 60-70 percent of their energy requirement from rice and its derived products. In India, rice occupies an area of 44 million hectares with an average production of 90 million tonnes at productivity of 2.0 tonnes per hectare. It is estimated that 140 million tones of rice would require by 2025 in India. Therefore to sustain present food self-sufficiency and to meet future food requirement, India has to increase its rice productivity by 3 per cent per annum.   The present production trend showed decline in productivity, mostly because of imbalanced use of fertilizers and pesticides, over-exploitation of the natural resources, particularly water, deterioration in physical conditions of the soil and emergence of new bio-types of pests and diseases. These led to yield stagnation, causing concern about the future potential for productivity growth and long-term sustainability. Thus the major challenge before the researcher is to innovate appropriate technologies to produce more food from diminished land resources for the burgeoning population pressure and to improve as well as conserve the natural resources of small and marginal farmers who contribute the greatest in this...

In bed planting systems, wheat or other crops are planted on the raised beds in ridge - furrow system. This system is often considered more appropriate for growing high value crops that are more sensitive to temporary water logging stress. Farmers often raise crops such as cotton, maize-soybean and wheat on the raised beds. However, the practice of growing rice, the major water-using crop in rice-wheat systems, on narrow raised beds was introduced only very recently in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) to reduce water use, conserve rainwater and improve system productivity. Recent work shows that system of raised bed planting of crops may be particularly advantageous in areas where groundwater levels are falling and herbicide-resistant weeds are becoming a problem. This tillage and crop establishment option also facilitates crop diversification and intercropping of wheat, chickpea and Indian-mustard with sugarcane, maize with potato, mint with wheat, rice with soybean, and pigeon pea with sorghum or green gram. Although bed planted wheat in rotation with soybeans covered more than 75% area under wheat by 1994 in Mexico, the South Asian rice-wheat farmers are still experimenting with this system of crop planting in the Indo-Gangetic Plains to address issues...

Agriculture sector is considered as the back bone of Indian economy contributing directly and indirectly to the growth and development of our country. Since independence our country has attained significant achievements standing self sufficient in food grain production. The achievement is because of the scientific technological interventions and the utilization of the available natural resources which were in abundance. Hence Irrigation water availability predominantly being the major contributing factor in this regard. With the advancement in the agriculture sector, it now becomes imperative to utilize the available natural wealth of resources in a manageable way for sustaining agricultural production and productivity. Efficient utilization of water resources forms the basis of survival of the ever increasing population of our country.Ladakh region of India is a cold arid desert placed on high altitudes with scarce water resources, high evapo-transpirational losses, harsh dry winds, and totality of climatic conditions harsh and tough, hindering the agricultural advancement(Fig.1). The annual precipitation is between 100 to 150 mm, quite inadequate to meet the average moisture requirements of the crop plants. Thus supplementary irrigation becomes essential to raise the food crops. The only source of available irrigation water available is the glaciers placed on high altitudes...

India is predominantly an agricultural country and even with current orientation towards services, still agriculture contributes ¼th of total GDP of the country, 15 percent of total export and 65 % of total population’s livelihood. After independence, India has made remarkable progress in increasing food production and productivity, credit goes to concerted efforts made under various Agri revolutions. For agriculture Land and Water are two most important resources. Of which, water (irrigation) becomes lifeline of agriculture. It is a truth in agriculture “if we fail in irrigation, we will fail in agriculture”. Water is required for agriculture as well as for other sectors (Domestic, Industries, etc) and the demand of water is increasing alarmingly. At present level, agriculture consumes over 80 per cent of total water consumption in India. The country is endowed with many perennial and seasonal rivers. The river system which constitute 71 per cent of water resources is concentrated in 36 % of geographic area. Most of agricultural fields are irrigated by use of underground water for assured irrigation, however, erratic, mansoon based rainfall is source for water for rainfed agriculture. Though water is a renewable resource, the recharge is ultimately limited to rain. Drought like situation in Indian agriculture is more common and...
