Protected cultivation is the finest alternative and drudgery-free strategy for managing land and other resources more efficiently in the current context of everlasting need for vegetables and significantly shrinking land holdings. The natural environment is changed to optimal circumstances for optimum plant growth in a protected environment (greenhouse, glasshouse, or polyhouse), resulting in high-quality veggies. Greenhouses are often coated with plastic film that allows solar radiation to flow through while trapping the thermal radiation emitted by the plants inside. The CO2 generated by the plants at night is kept inside, increasing photosynthesis rates throughout the day. The humidity inside is also raised by evaporation from the soil and plants. Ultra-mode devices are also utilised to control the internal environment. Vegetable growing in a protected environment is a beautiful art form. The structure of the greenhouse in India is determined by the economic situation of the growers/fanners. As a result, there are three types of greenhouses produced in India. Low-cost greenhouse / poly house The low-cost polyhouse is a zero-energy chamber made of 700 gauge polythene sheet and bamboos with 'sutli' and 'nails'. Its size is determined by the purpose of its use and the available space. It has one aperture, similar to the greenhouse, that is left open...

Environment is defined as surrounding or everything outside the plant which influence the life of plant e.g. temperature, rain, light, humidity and soil etc. There are 3 major classes of environmental factors: Climatic factors like light, temperature, humidity, wind, rain and photoperiod, Topographic factors like Slope of particular place, altitude etc and Soil/Edaphic factors like soil pH, soil structure, texture, organic matter in soil The geographic distribution, plant growth and development are largely influenced by environment. If any environmental factor deviates from optimum requirement, it results in hindrance of plant growth and development by various means. For example, only plants requiring very small amount of water can live in deserts. The environmental stresses directly or indirectly leads to incidence of various plant growth affecting biotic or abiotic stresses. 1. Role of Temperature                        Temperature does not supply energy to plants, but controls rate of chemical reactions. It controls the plant development including morphogenesis and plant quality. Temperature, diurnal temperature-alternating day and night temperature and optimum temperature range have close relationship between yield and quality of vegetables. Effect of temperature on Plant Physiology Temperature is most important factor for plant growth because it has unique regulatory influences. Different metabolic responses, enzymatic activity, membrane permeability, substrate concentration and cumulative reactions are influenced. Water uptake...

Monthly agricultural  activities for vegetable availability throughout the year

Essential elements of the vegetable production

Integrated nutrient management (INM) is an approach to soil fertility management that combines organic and mineral methods of soil fertilization with physical and biological measures for soil and water conservation. INM adopts a holistic view of plant nutrient management by considering the totality of the farm resources that can be used as plant nutrients. Integrated nutrient management is based on three fundamental principles: maximize the use of organic material ensure access to inorganic fertilizer and improve the efficiency of its use minimize losses of plant nutrients Research gaps in integrated nutrient management The research gaps include: Mismatching of INM practices developed at research stations with the farmers resources and their practices INM recommendations for different crops are not based on soil testing and nutrient release behaviour of the manures Nutrient balance/flow analysis vis-a-vis soil fertility management practices with special reference to INM at farm level needs to be worked out Nutrient release characteristics of farm residues in relation to their quality to develop decision support systems Biofertilizers were not included as component of INM in many cases; and Integrated Farming Systems approach needs to be encouraged for sustaining livelihood in rural areas particularly for small and marginal farmers. Role of biofertilizers in INM Different types of biofertilizers available at present among that Rhizobium is relatively more...
