Animal husbandry is an important part of the livelihood of the farmers. Livestock farming has given a self-operating business for farmers and providing an alternative source of livelihood holding under natural disasters. Based on livestock population, India ranks first in the world. Along with this India's milk production in the first place in the world. However, milk production per animal India is far behind in comparison with several countries. Primarily may be because of lack of adequate forage, its nutritious value and milch animals generally have to rely on crop residues. An estimated lack of green fodder, dried fodder and concentrates is 36%, 40% and 44% respectively. Under this situation improvement in production of various forage crop species, improved variety can be used to ensure availability of green fodder. Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute has developed improved crop varieties of various forage crops with rich in quality. Annual fodder crops (cereals fodder) Corn, millet, oats, and barley cereals fodder crops. These crops is harvested at 50% flowering stage. Cereals crops have higher tonnage of green fodder productivity than legumes. Annual cereals fodder crops can be grown under rain-fed farming system except oats and barley. The protein content of cereals fodder is less, so that it usually mixed...

Azolla: An awesome and amazing Plant

The main constraints for productivity of fodder crops are lack of availability of soil nutrients, quality seeds and various pests and diseases. These constraints not only influence on the productivity, but also quality of fodder. Resource poor farmers often cultivate forage on low productive soils to make use of the idle land and do not apply the required quantity of nutrients. Such farmers have several options to boost crop yields by applying low cost inputs such as soil amendments, organic manure and bio-fertilisers. Unfortunately, most of them do not bother to apply biofertilisers and soil amendments due to their ignorance and difficulty in procuring them. Even some farmers using pesticides in cultivated fodder crops to control pests and diseases. Extensive use of chemicals is non-economical and may cause the problems of environmental pollution and health hazards in livestock. In this regard, creating awareness on natural resources and their beneficial association in fodder production is very important aspect for the quality production of fodder. Therefore this article we emphasizing the direct or indirect role of beneficial association of pollinators, soil arthropods and arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi in major forage crops 1. Role of Pollinators in forage crops In fodder insects play important role in the pollination of many plants...

Eastern region of India possesses large number of ruminant population (162 million) which is equivalent to almost 55 million adult cattle units that depend on available feed resources.  The dry and green roughages contribute to the tune of 80-90 percent in their ration and hence, a total of 184 million ton dry matter is required to feed the present population. Generally, green fodder contribution varies from 25 to 40 percent in ruminant’s ration depending upon availability. But, at the same time, an acute shortage of green fodder prevails in the eastern part of India that varies from 82 to 89 percent. The main reason behind this gap is low land holding and negligible area under fodder production. Feeding of fodder not only balances the different nutrients in the ration but also useful in health and reproduction point of view. Therefore, considering the above problem, a study was conducted to evaluate wheat as fodder cum grain production to mitigate fodder scarcity problem in the eastern part of India.  A plot was prepared by adding FYM @ 5 t/ha. Then, wheat (var. VL-829) was sown in the first week of November with the distance of 30 cm row-to-row and 10 cm plant-to-plant in different small plots of 10 m2 size...

Weed management for bursim and Lucerne

Agriculture accounts for 54.6% of total employment in India and contributes 15.2% of total GDP. Livestock occupies a crucial position in Indian agriculture and directly contributing 27% of agricultural GDP. India, with 2.29% of the world land area, is maintaining about 10.71% of world’s livestock population. The number of milch animals have increased from 62 million in 2000 to 83.15 million in 2012 resulting in 4.04% year-on-year growth rate of milk. Thus, to sustain this growth rate and for further expansion to meet the demands of ever growing human population, livestock needs sustainable supply of feed material. The area under fodder cultivation is estimated to be about 4% of the gross cropped area which remained static for the last four decades. The traditional grazing lands are gradually diminishing because of urbanization, expansion of cultivable area, grazing pressure and industrialization etc. These factors resulted in severe shortage of feed and fodder to the extent of 26% in dry-crop residues, 35.6% in green fodder and 41% of concentrates. To reduce the demand and supply gap, the production and productivity of fodder crops needs to be enhanced. The horizontal expansion of cultivable area under fodder crops is difficult due to severe competition from food crops. Apart...
