Orphan crops are  crops that are not traded internationally and very less attention is provided to them in terms of research, training and extension. These are grown in Asia, Africa and South America. Generally these constitute major part of local diet. In comparison to major food crops like rice, wheat and maize, breeding technology for orphan crops is far away behind. Similar to major crops, orphan crops are also member of different types of food i.e. cereals, legumes, vegetables, root and tuber crops. Orphan crops are also called as neglected, minor, promising, niche, traditional, alternative crops, future smart food and many more. Worldwide, around 12000 crop species are classified as suitable for human consumption, yet 30 crops play important role in feeding the world and to our utter surprise out of that, 60% of world population’s dietary energy is fed by rice, maize and wheat. This is mainly due to strong policy support, target breeding efforts and trade policies in favor of major food crops. Beside these factors changes in traditional food habits have resulted in an overdependence on energy rich and nutrient poor staple crops. Different types of orphan crops are: 1. Millets: Millets ere tolerant to moisture deficit (Kholova et. al,2010) and have great suitability in semi arid...

Quality Seed Production Methods in Pulses Crop

Improved cultivation of Blackgram (Urad)

Scientific cultivation of Lentil pule

Pigeon pea is an important pulse crop and has major role in food and nutritional security because it is a rich source of protein, minerals and vitamins. The cultivated area and production of pigeonpea have recorded a steady positive growth in the past 50 years, but the mean national productivity has remained unchanged at around 700 kg/ha. To increase its productivity, breeders are trying to develop suitable varieties with subjective spread, growth, duration, disease and pest resistance under varied agro-climatic growing conditions.  Diseases are a continual problem and control measures must be planned for developing sustained production. Each condition that affects plant growth also affects the disease causing organism and the effectiveness of any control measure. In general, conditions that favour rapid, lush plant growth also favor disease development. No single control method is effective in every disease situation. Often a complex of disease interactions defies simple explanations or solutions. Thus to overcome these constraints Integrated disease management (IDM) has been developed for pigeonpea diseases. “Integrated disease management (IDM) involves reducing losses due to diseases to tolerable levels, allowing agriculture to remain productive and profitable while minimizing health and environmental risks. IDM contributes to long-term sustainability by combining the judicious use of management tools”. Integrated disease management for pigeonpea diseases includes...

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is one of the most important legume crops of India. It is known as red gram, arhar and tur in the country. It is an important source of proteins (22%) along with carbohydrates, fibre, certain minerals viz., iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iodine, potassium and Phosphorous and ‘B’ complex vitamins.  Pigeonpea stalks are also a major source of firewood and live stock feed. India is the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses including pigeonpea. About 90% of the global pigeonpea area is in India contributing to 93% of the global production. It occupies 4.9 m ha area with 3.1 mt production which accounts for a productivity of 1145 kg/ha; ranking ninth in the world. Kharif is the main growing season of pigeonpea in India and major pigeonpea growing states are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Chhattisgarh. Cultivation of pigeonpea on bunds in low land areas is becoming popular and profitable among the farmers. Traditional varieties of pigeonpea need about 6 to 9 months to mature, while the improved varieties developed can be harvested in 3-4 months. Both long duration (180 days) and medium duration (130-140 days) genotypes are grown in...

Grain legumes, also known as pulses, are plants belonging to the family Leguminasae, which are grown primarily for their edible grains or seeds. These seeds are harvested mature and marketed dry, to be used as food or feed. Traditionally the system of using legumes as the norm routine diet dates back to ancient times in India. India is largest producer of pulses in the world with 25 per cent share in global production. Chickpea, pigeonpea, mungnean, uradbean, lintil, and fieldpea are important pulses crop contributing 39 per cent, 21 per cent, 11 per cent, 10 per cent, 7 per cent and 5 per cent to the total production of pulses in the country. The total production was estimated 14.56 million tonnes and an area of 23.63 million hectares with average productivity 616 kg/ha (MOSPI, 2008-09) (Fig. 1). In recent years, price of legumes has been increasing drastically forcing small scale farmers to take up the crop at least for home consumption. These plants have the advantage of fixing atmospheric nitrogen for their own needs and for soil enrichment, thereby reducing the cost of fertilizer inputs in crop farming.   Figure 1.
