Seed treatment is essential for high-quality seed production and healthy crop growth. It protects crops from sap-sucking pests during the early stages and prevents diseases transmitted through seeds and soil. Various fungicides, insecticides and biological agents are used for seed treatment. This process not only improves seed germination rates but also ensures crops remain healthy and resilient against pests and diseases. Farmers, particularly those cultivating various crops in the rabi season, should select high-quality, disease-resistant crop varieties and ensure they perform seed treatment. Seed treatment in different crops: Rice : For rice farmers, if using wet nursery beds, mix 3 grams of Carbendazim per kilogram of seeds and coat them before spreading the seeds in the nursery bed. For dry nursery beds, soak the seeds for 24 hours in a solution of 1 gram of Carbendazim per liter of water, then spread the sprouted seeds in the nursery bed. One liter of this solution is sufficient to soak one kilogram of seeds. Treating seeds with this fungicide can prevent early-stage diseases such as blast and leaf spot. Additionally, before transplanting rice seedlings, soaking the seed bundles for 12 hours in a solution of 1.6 ml of Chlorpyrifos 50% EC per liter of water can protect the...

Phyllochron, defined as the interval time between appearances of successive leaves on a shoot, is an important measurement to know the developmental state of a shoot apex in rice. Shoot development of rice was divided into three stages, regardless of environment and genotype: Maintenance of short phyllochron in the early developmental stage Drastic increase of phyllochron depending on leaf number from the base in the late stage and Decrease of phyllochron before final leaf stage. Origin The modeling of the phyllochron was first published in 1951 when Katayama presented the growth rules, he had worked out for leaf emergence on the main stem and tillers of rice, wheat and barley. The numbers of tillers that emerged from the main tiller and subsequent tillers according to respective tiller orders (main, primary, secondary and tertiary) reflecting their sequence of emergences. The number of total tillers and tertiary tillers increased ex-potentially as the number of phyllochrons (often referred to as leaf number) advanced. It was the growth in number of tertiary tillers that drove the total number up so sharply.   Production of tillers in rice The number of primary and secondary tillers increased more linearly with the advance of phyllochrons (the number of periods of tiller emergence). The first primary tiller emerges from the main...

Importance of varieties selection and nursery management for improvement in paddy production

Nematodes problems, symptoms and management in rice crop

Rice is a primary staple food crop for billions of people worldwide. To ensure global food security for continuing population growth, it is vital to control the various insect pests that damage rice (Normile, 2008). Among the herbivorous insects, Brown Planthopper (BPH), Nilaparvata lugens (Stal) to be considered as the devastating pest of rice, causing much distress among rice growers in the tropics, thereby posing serious threat to the national food security.  Both nymphs and adults of brown planthopper are mostly found at the base of the tillers, where shade and humidity is high, providing suitable microclimate for their multiplication. It can reduce the yield upto 80% depending on the degree of infestation. Direct sown fields are more prone to heavy damage than transplanted fields. A hemipteran pest exhibiting incomplete metamorphosis with following stages Egg: White colour banana or crescent shaped egg which is 0.99 mm long.Nymph: Body is creamy white with a pale brown ting and has a prominent median line from the base of the vertex to metathorax.Adult: Brown coloured body and chestnut brown eyes. Adults measures about 2.5-3.0 mm long can exist in two physical forms, long-winged (macropterous) and short-winged (brachypterous). The legs are hairless and the hind leg has a large, mobile tibial spur.Life...

Silicon (Si) is next to oxygen (O) in quantity on earth’s crust. Silicon in combination with oxygen forms silicon dioxide (SiO2) which is also known as silica. About 87% of the earth’s surface is made up of silica. There are 200 over types of silicate rocks in nature. These include quartz and mica. The white mica is made up of silicon, potassium and aluminum whereas the black mica contains iron and magnesium. The original soil minerals are predominantly silicate compounds. The silicon in sand, silt, and clay is extremely insoluble and difficult to be absorbed by plant. However, under the reaction of soil microorganism and a process called hydration, a small portion of silicon in the form of silicic acids (H4SiO4) is weakly soluble and thus become available to plants. Differential Absorption of Silicon by Rice Plants Plants vary in their ability to absorb silicon. Plants that can absorb and accumulate silicon in their tissues are known as silicon accumulators. These plants can accumulate up to 4-7% of silicon in their foliage. In contrary, the silicon non-accumulators can only absorb and store 0.5-1.5% of silicon. In general, dicot plants contain low quantity of silicon. Rice exhibits the greatest uptake of silicic acid in the grass family....

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple food crops in the world. In Asia, more than two billion people are getting 60-70 percent of their energy requirement from rice and its derived products. In India, rice occupies an area of 44 million hectares with an average production of 90 million tonnes at productivity of 2.0 tonnes per hectare. It is estimated that 140 million tones of rice would require by 2025 in India. Therefore to sustain present food self-sufficiency and to meet future food requirement, India has to increase its rice productivity by 3 per cent per annum.   The present production trend showed decline in productivity, mostly because of imbalanced use of fertilizers and pesticides, over-exploitation of the natural resources, particularly water, deterioration in physical conditions of the soil and emergence of new bio-types of pests and diseases. These led to yield stagnation, causing concern about the future potential for productivity growth and long-term sustainability. Thus the major challenge before the researcher is to innovate appropriate technologies to produce more food from diminished land resources for the burgeoning population pressure and to improve as well as conserve the natural resources of small and marginal farmers who contribute the greatest in this...
