Rice Blast Causal Organism -Pyricularia oryzae (Syn: P. grisea) (Sexual stage: Magnaporthe grisea) Symptom- On the leaves, the lesions start as small water soaked bluish green specks, soon enlarge and form characteristic boat shaped spots with grey centre and dark brown margin. The spots join together as the disease progresses and large areas of the leaves dry up and wither. Similar spots are also formed on the sheath. Severely infected nursery and field show a burnt appearance. At the flower emergence, the fungus attacks the peduncle which is engirdled, and the lesion turns to brownish-black. This stage of infection is commonly referred to as rotten neck / neck rot / neck blast / panicle blast. In early neck infection, grain filling does not occur and the panicle remains erect like a dead heart caused by a stem borer. In the late infection, partial grain filling occurs. Small brown to black spots also may be observed on glumes of the heavily infected panicles. Management   Use of seeds from a disease free crop  Grow resistant varieties like  MTU 1010, Swathi, IR 64, IR 36, Jaya, Vijaya, Ratna,  Remove and destroy the weed hosts in the field bunds and channels.  Split application of nitrogen and judicious application of nitrogenous fertilizers  Treat the seeds with Captan or Thiram or Carbendazim...

Rice (Oryza sativa) is one of the most important food crops. It is staple food for more than half of the world’s population. India is one of the largest rice growing country with an area of around 44 m ha and production of more than 100 million tonnes. Rice is grown in almost all the states of India contributing about 42 per cent to the country’s food grain production and provides livelihood to about 70 per cent of the population. Basmati Rice, a special class of rice has contributed significantly for rice production and its export to other countries and is in high demand due to its high cooking quality and special aroma. During 2011–12 a total of 3.21 million tonnes of basmati rice was exported from India. But the bottleneck in its production is the disease pests. Unlikely to general rice, Basmati group is more prone to Bakanae disease along with some other important diseases. Recently there have been reports from USA and European countries regarding residue of fungicides in basmati rice which is detrimental for human health. The residue can be minimized by application of fungicides at recommended dosages and at appropriate time/stage. In the present article major diseases of...

Paddy cultivation in low cost by zero tillage (Direct sowing) technique is beneficial for farmers .

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) , the staple food of more than three billion people in the world, is cultivated under diverse ecosystems ranging from irrigated to rainfed upland to rainfed lowland to deep water. In India, the total area under rainfed lowland and upland rice is 14.4 and 6.3 million ha, respectively. The frequent occurrence of abiotic stresses such as drought has been identified as the key to the low productivity of rice in rainfed ecosystems, particularly in eastern region of India. The eastern region comprises of Bihar, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and plains of Assam, represents 21.85% geographical area of the country and supports to 33.64% of country production. Most of the current high-yielding varieties of rice grown in rainfed areas are varieties bred for irrigated ecosystems and they are highly susceptible to water scarcity (drought) condition. Keeping this fact in view, there is urgent need to disseminate and adoption of high yielding drought tolerant varieties to achieve food self sufficiency at national level from eastern region. Water requirement of puddled irrigated and rainfed upland rice Studies across the country indicate that puddled irrigated rice requires about 900-2250 mm of water (average 1500 mm) depending on the...

Weed management in rice crop

4 Important diseases of Paddy crop 1.

कश्मीर घाटी में चावल गहनता (एसआरआई) प्रणाली के कार्यान्वयन की गुंजाइश व उपयोगिता “The system of rice intensification (SRI)" is a method of rice cultivation that involves efficient utilization of natural resources in conjunction with judicious use of external inputs to produce optimum rice yield.  Although SRI is best explained operationally in terms of making certain changes in conventional rice-growing practices, it is not best defined in terms of practices. SRI is a strategy of irrigated rice production, adapted to local conditions, that alters plant, soil, water and nutrient management practices with the purpose of (a) inducing larger and better-functioning root systems, and (b) more abundant, diverse and active communities of soil biota that live in association with the root systems. These organisms include both flora and fauna. SRI cultivation is a system rather than a technology. It is based on the insights that rice has the potential to produce more tillers and grains than now observed and that early transplanting and optimal growth conditions spacing, humidity, biological active and healthy soil and aerobic soil conditions during vegetative growth can fulfill this potential. Presently sizeable farmers are practicing SRI in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal & Punjab, Orissa and has been also initiated in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jammu and Kashmir,  Bihar,...

Rice which is to be transplanted into lowland puddled soil must first be nursed on seedbeds. The main reason for nursing rice is simple: to give the seedlings a substantial head start on weeds. Four types of nurseries are commonly used: The wet bed nursery, The dry bed nursery, The “dapog”. And the SRI system . Each type has advantages and disadvantages, and you will probably end up using different nursing methods depending on the situation. Always keep in mind that it is really very easy to raise healthy seedlings if you are prepared to take enough time to do the job properly. Success in raising healthy rice seedlings depends mainly on constant supervision of the seedbeds and proper management. 1.  The Wet Bed Nursery The nursing of rice seedlings by the wet bed method is carried out on raised beds within the field. Select a fertile, level plot with good water control. Soil preparation, should always be very thorough. At least one ploughing and a careful puddling are necessary to loosen the soil as well as to facilitate the decomposition of organic matter. The addition of organic material to plots designated as nursery areas can help ensure seedling vitality, provided it is added early enough to decompose...
