Biofortification technology to improve food security and fight malnutrition

Plant breeding is an art, science and technology of improving genetic makeup of plants for the benefit of humankind. The genetic diversity of crop plants is the foundation for the sustainable development of new varieties for present and future challenges which arises due to the various biotic and abiotic stresses. Genetic diversity provides an option to farmers and plant breeders to develop new and more productive crops / varieties through selection, hybridization and breeding, that are resistant to virulent pests and diseases and adapted to changing environmental conditions. Pre-breeding is necessary for making the germplasm usable in traditional breeding. It is useful in creating vast genetic diversity, broadening genetic base of the population, improving adaptation, value addition by transferring useful alleles from un-adapted sources to adapted cultivars etc. However, use of genes from wild species poses several problems such as cross incompatibility, hybrid inviability, hybrid sterility and linkage between desirable and undesirable alleles. Pre-breeding work has yielded significant results in many field crops such as maize, sorghum, barley, rice, potato, cotton, oilseeds, pulses etc. . The aim should not only be to exploit intraspecific variation within a crop but also to increase interspecific diversity in agriculture through genetic improvement and promotion of less...

TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes) is a method in molecular biology that allows directed identification of mutations in a specific gene or allele. TILLING was introduced in (McCallum et al. 2000) by using the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. TILLING has since been used as a reverse genetics method in other organisms such as zebrafish, corn, wheat, rice, soybean, tomato and lettuce. TILLING is a general reverse genetic technique that combines chemical mutagenesis with PCR based screening to identify point mutations in regions of interest. TILLING is a powerful technology that employed heteroduplex analysis to detect which organism in a population carry single nucleotide mutation in specific genes. McCallum utilized reverse genetic approaches such as  T-DNA lines and antisense RNA, but was unable to successfully apply these approaches to characterize CMT2.The approach that was successful turned out to be what is now known as TILLING. TILLING can also be used to detect naturally occurring SNP in genes among the accession, variety or cultivar. To study the gene function, or to detect genetic marker in population. TILLING methodology can also be used to uncover natural nucleotide variation linked to important phenotypic characters, a process termed EcoTILLING (Comai et al. 2004). The current status of various plant TILLING and EcoTILLING methods are generally applicable across the plant kingdom.  DNA sequence     → Protein  →...

Drip irrigation systems are prone to clogging or blockagedue to improper maintenance, There are Several factors that are responsible for the clogging of drip irrigation system, They include Presence of Microorganisms in the system(Bacterial slime, Algal growth). Presence of Large Particles and the suspended particles (Clay and silt) in the water source, which enter and Block the Drip system. Presence of Certain dissolved salts (Carbonates and Bicarbonates, Calcium and Magnesium, iron) where they precipitate and form deposits within the lateral pipes but some times they also lead to the blockage of the emitters. Filtration of the water through the Primary (Sand Filter (open water source) and Screen Filter (Borewell)) and Secondary Filters (Disc Filter (Costly) and Screen Filter (Cheaper)) do not remove the microorganisms and dissolved salts, The microorganisms interact with the sand particles and they lead to the clogging of the drip irrigation system, To rectify the problem of clogging, Acid or chlorine (chemicals) is injected along with the irrigation water, Hence this process is called as chemigation or Chemical treatment. Acid treatment is used for Rectifying the problem caused by the Dissolved or precipitated salts, whereas Chlorine treatment is used for rectifying the problems caused by the microbial growth In the drip system, These Chemicals can be injected by...

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is perennial vegetable oil yielding crop. Which gives 4-6 t/ha of oil yield per hectare. Area covered under oil palm in India is around 3, 25000 hectares and Andhra Pradesh is leading in area with 1, 56000 hectares. India is the world's largest importer of palm oil, importing of 8-9 million tonnes of the edible oil per annum from the overseas market. Palm oil accounts for over 60 % of the country's total edible oil imports. India imports palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, the world's largest producers. To reduce the import of oil from other country we need to increase area under oil palm with production of more oil yield to self sufficient of our country. Variation in the fruits was observed in the oil palm. There are different fruit types and forms were observed in this oil palm. Due to this variation in fruits oil yield also varies. Different classification of fruit types and forms based on different components given in table. Fruit types were classified based on external colour of fruits in bunch. These were mainly classified into two types: Nigrescence and Virescence. Based on mesocarp colour it was classified as Albescence. Based on fruit morphology, it was classified...

Plants are the prime source of essential minerals nutrients. These mineral elements which play vital role for human beings for their existence and the continuity race of life. Some plants are rich for some mineral and have deficiency to the other. No plant alone that contain all mineral elements in efficiently for human beings from the earth. Deficiency of mineral is also called as ‘Hidden hunger’, results in poor growth and compromised psychomotor development of children, reduced immunity, exhausted, fatigue, irritability, weakness, hair loss, wasting of muscles, sterility, morbidity and demise (Stein, 2010). Conventional breeding and genetic engineering techniques are the two approaches that may be used to bio-fortify the crops with minerals like iron and zinc (Tiwari et al., 2010).  “Biofortification” or “biological fortification” called as nutritionally enhanced food crops with increased bioavailability to the human population that are developed and grown using modern biotechnology tools, conventional plant breeding methods, and agronomic practices. Biofortification is an upcoming, effective, bright, cost-effective, and sustainable technique of providing micronutrients to a population that has limited access to diverse diets and other micronutrient interventions. Success stories of biofortification include lysine and tryptophan rich QPM (quality protein maize), Vitamin A rich orange sweet potato; generated by crop breeding, oleic acid,...
